Nine months: crawling and cruising

Crawling confidently, standing at the sofa and pointing at what matters.

Many nine-month-olds crawl well and cruise along furniture. They look for a toy that disappears under a blanket, point, and say "mama" and "dada" sounds. This month brings the IPV-2 polio vaccine and a check-up.

Growth

Weight

7.7–10.5 kg

Length

70–76 cm

Typical range; your paediatrician tracks your baby on a growth chart. Monthly weight gain is now around 250–400 g.

What your baby is learning

  • Many babies crawl well and fast, and cruise sideways along the sofa or wall while holding on.
  • Object permanence: your baby looks for a toy hidden under a cloth and enjoys dropping things to watch you pick them up.
  • Pointing with the index finger begins, and your baby follows your point to look at something.
  • Babbling sounds like "mama" and "dada", not always aimed at the right person yet. Your baby understands "no", their name and a few everyday words.
  • The pincer grasp is getting precise: picking up crumbs and small pieces of food with thumb and finger.

Feeding

  • Three meals and one or two snacks alongside breastfeeding or formula; by now most food can be mashed with a fork or offered as soft pieces rather than puréed.
  • Bring your baby to the dastarkhan at family mealtimes: watching others eat, with their own spoon to hold, teaches more than any coaxing.
  • Iron matters most now: meat, liver, poultry, lentils and iron-fortified porridge daily, with vegetables or fruit alongside to help absorption.
  • Keep avoiding honey, salt, sugar, tea, juice and whole nuts or grapes, and do not use cow's milk as the main drink before one year.

Sleep

About 12–14 hours with two naps, often one in the morning and one after lunch. A baby who can stand may practise it in the cot at night; gently lie them down and keep the routine. Back-sleeping, own sleep surface, no pillows or blankets: still the safest arrangement.

Check-ups and vaccines

  • Vaccination: IPV-2 (inactivated polio vaccine, injected) is due at 9 months. A sore leg and mild fever for a day are common; call if the fever reaches 39 °C or lasts more than two days.
  • Nine-month check-up at the polyclinic: weight, length, head circumference and a developmental review of sitting, crawling, grasping and babbling.
  • Ask about screening for iron-deficiency anaemia (a simple blood count). It is common at 9–12 months, especially in babies who were small, premature or started solids late.

Play and everyday tips

  • Containers to fill and empty, stacking cups and a wooden spoon with a pot are favourites; so is any game of hiding and finding.
  • Read aloud daily in Uzbek, Russian or both, and name what your baby points at. Songs with hand movements and clapping games build language and rhythm.
  • Let your baby cruise along a low, stable sofa; pad sharp table corners and remove tablecloths that can be pulled down.
  • Keep screens off for babies under two years (WHO); talking, singing and playing with you teaches far more.

Call the doctor or 103 if

  • Fever of 39 °C or higher, any fever lasting more than three days, breathing difficulty, or a non-blanching rash.
  • Dehydration during diarrhoea: fewer than four wet nappies in 24 hours, a dry mouth, sunken eyes, no tears.
  • Refusing all feeds, unusual drowsiness or floppiness, or a seizure.
  • Developmental: not sitting with support by nine months, not babbling, not responding to their name or to sounds, or loss of skills already gained. Discuss with your paediatrician at the check-up.
  • If any urgent sign appears, call 103 or go to the polyclinic/hospital.

Trust your instinct. If your baby seems unwell to you, call 103 or go to the polyclinic.
