First trimester · 1 weeks pregnant
Week 1: your period
Pregnancy is counted from here, although conception is still two weeks away.
Doctors count pregnancy from the first day of your last period, so week 1 is your period itself. Nothing is growing yet, but your body is already preparing an egg.

How your baby is developing
- The lining of the uterus is shed, which is your period.
- Hormones from the brain tell the ovaries to start maturing a group of follicles, one of which will release this cycle's egg.
- Your due date is counted from this week: 40 weeks from the first day of this period.
How you may feel
- Period bleeding and cramps
- Tiredness or low mood from the hormone dip
- Breast tenderness easing as the period starts
If you are planning a pregnancy, this is the ideal moment to start the habits that matter most in the first weeks after conception.
What's next
Tests and appointments
- A preconception visit at your polyclinic is a good idea if you have not had one: review long-term conditions, medicines, vaccinations and family history.
What to do this week
- Take folic acid every day: the national protocol in Uzbekistan recommends 1 mg (1000 µg) from three months before conception until 12 weeks. It lowers the risk of spina bifida.
- Uzbekistan is an iodine-deficient region: take 200 µg of potassium iodide daily throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding unless your doctor advises otherwise.
- Stop smoking and alcohol, and cut back on caffeine to under 200 mg a day (about two cups of coffee).
- Note the first day of this period. You will be asked for it many times.
- Check with a pharmacist or doctor that any regular medicines are safe in pregnancy.
Call your doctor or maternity hospital if
- Very heavy periods, severe period pain or cycles shorter than 21 or longer than 35 days are worth discussing with a doctor before trying to conceive.
If something feels wrong, trust yourself and call 103 or your maternity hospital. You will never be wasting anyone's time.
