The head makes up about half of your baby's length. Tooth buds, hair follicles and nail beds are forming, and the diaphragm is developing, which later brings hiccups. First-trimester screening starts this week.

Size and weight

About the size of

Length

4.1 cm

Weight

7 g

Averages from standard growth charts. Measured crown to rump until week 20 and head to heel afterwards.

How your baby is developing

  • Tooth buds form under the gums, and hair follicles appear on the skin.
  • Hands open and close; the baby can stretch and somersault.
  • The genitals are developing but still hard to tell apart on a scan.
  • The diaphragm forms and the baby may start to hiccup.

How you may feel

  • Bloating and a slightly bigger bump
  • Increased appetite as nausea eases for some
  • Oily skin or spots
  • Leg cramps at night
  • Thicker, shinier hair

Nausea often starts to lift between 11 and 14 weeks. If it does not, there are safe treatments; you do not have to simply endure it.

What's next

Tests and appointments

  • First screening in Uzbekistan: a free ultrasound at your polyclinic between 11 weeks 0 days and 13 weeks 6 days, with nuchal translucency measurement and blood tests (PAPP-A and free beta-hCG).
  • The scan also confirms your due date and checks for twins. Midwives usually schedule the appointment; ask if you have not heard.

What to do this week

  • Book the combined screening if you want it; it is time-limited.
  • Eat iron-rich foods (red meat, lentils, leafy greens) with vitamin C to help absorption.
  • Stretch your calves before bed to prevent cramps.

Call your doctor or maternity hospital if

  • Bleeding that is heavier than light spotting, or bleeding with cramps
  • Severe pain on one side of your lower abdomen, or pain with dizziness or fainting
  • Vomiting so often that you cannot keep fluids down for 24 hours
  • A temperature of 38 °C or higher, or pain when you pass urine

If something feels wrong, trust yourself and call 103 or your maternity hospital. You will never be wasting anyone's time.
