Week 14: welcome to the second trimester
Often the most comfortable stretch of pregnancy.
Your baby can squint, frown and grimace, and is covered in fine hair called lanugo. The thyroid is working and the kidneys produce urine. Many women feel markedly better from now.

How your baby is developing
- Facial muscles work: the baby squints, frowns and may suck a thumb.
- Fine hair (lanugo) covers the body to help keep the skin warm.
- The thyroid gland produces hormones; the liver makes bile.
- The sex organs are fully formed, although often still hard to see on a scan.
How you may feel
- More energy and appetite
- Less nausea for most
- Thicker hair and faster-growing nails
- Nosebleeds and a blocked nose
- A rounder bump
From now on routine visits are usually every four weeks until 28 weeks, then more often.
What's next
Tests and appointments
- Routine polyclinic visit: blood pressure, urine, weight and a chat about your screening results.
- The second screening ultrasound is done between 16 and 20 weeks in Uzbekistan; make sure it is scheduled.
What to do this week
- Enjoy moderate exercise: aim for about 150 minutes a week of activity that lets you still talk.
- Eat an extra snack rather than an extra meal; needs rise by only about 300 calories a day in the second trimester.
- Keep up calcium (three portions of dairy or fortified alternatives a day).
Call your doctor or maternity hospital if
- Any vaginal bleeding, or fluid leaking from the vagina
- Regular, painful tightenings or period-like cramps
- A severe headache, blurred vision, or sudden swelling of your face and hands
- Severe or persistent abdominal pain, fever, or pain when you pass urine
If something feels wrong, trust yourself and call 103 or your maternity hospital. You will never be wasting anyone's time.
