Week 2: ovulation
An egg is released around the end of this week. This is your fertile window.
In a typical 28-day cycle ovulation happens around day 14. The egg lives for about a day, while sperm can survive up to five days, so the days just before ovulation are the most fertile.

How your baby is developing
- One follicle becomes dominant and releases a mature egg into the fallopian tube.
- The uterine lining thickens again under the influence of oestrogen, ready to receive an embryo.
- If a sperm meets the egg within about 24 hours, fertilisation happens in the tube.
How you may feel
- Clear, stretchy cervical mucus like raw egg white
- A mild one-sided twinge in the lower abdomen (ovulation pain)
- A slight rise in basal body temperature after ovulation
- Higher energy and libido
Ovulation tests detect the hormone surge about a day before the egg is released, which is the best time to try.
